ABOUT The Discomfort Room

This space is mostly a way for me to deal with everything going on in my world.

Hey, everybody!  I’m Steve.  I was born and raised on Chicago’s South Side; I’ve lived in Minnesota for over half of my life now.  I’m one-half of a mixed-heritage marriage (closing in on 13 years, with nearly 23 years as a couple under our belts) with 2 mixed-heritage kids that are my heart.  Family life has been easier than I had ever anticipated; that doesn’t mean that it’s been easy, by ANY stretch of the imagination.

While it was never my intention growing up, I’ve been a part of the wedding industry for the last 15 years or so.  I’m a wedding entertainer (read: Master of Ceremonies and DJ).  I’d been grooming myself to be in a managerial/supervisory role, but Life had other intentions for me.  Thanks to a role reversal in the household that landed me in Stay-At-Home Dad territory (and with a HUGE assist from my wife), I found myself working for one of the largest DJ services in Minnesota.  For the last 4 years, I’ve been navigating my way toward self-sufficiency as a solo operator.  It’s a work in progress and I struggle a LOT with uncertainty about doing the right things as a business owner.  When I see the smiles on the faces of members of the crowds that I play for; when I receive those compliments from my clients and witness the beginnings of their “Happily Ever After” stories, the uncertainty usually goes away (at least, for a little while).

This space is mostly a way for me to deal with everything going on in my world.  Most everything that I’m going to cover is based on my observations, my experiences.  It’s an outlet for me to get some of the voices out of my head and release some of the emotional energy that builds up out into the world.

It’ll sometimes be clumsy – some of what I put out here may alienate or even outrage others.  I’m fine with all of that because there’s only one principle rule that I’m going to adhere to:

It’s AUTHENTIC. It’s REAL. It’s TRUE TO WHO I AM.
